Yorkshire Water serves over four million customers in northern England, supplying both drinking water and sewerage services to cities including Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield and York.
However, the company also owns 76,000 acres of land, forming catchment areas around its Pennine reservoirs; the management team was keen to underline the firm’s commitment to the environment and to providing the public with open access to the countryside.
We worked with the catchment and recreation team to develop a £5m, long-term strategy which included writing a new microsite which described walking routes, provided maps, listed wildlife and even provided activities to entertain children on a day out. Podcasts recorded by Yorkshire celebrities - providing commentary on some of features to be seen on each walk - could also be downloaded from the new website.
The project won a Gold Award at the UK national awards organised by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations in 2006.
